GREAT BAY--St. Maarten will benefit from year-round air service from Montreal, Canada, beginning in 2027, following an announcement by Canadian airline Air Transat that it will extend its existing seasonal flights to the island beyond the traditional winter tourism period. The development will provide an additional direct connection between St. Maarten and the Canadian market throughout the year, including the summer months when airlift and visitor arrivals are typically lower.

The airline confirmed the expansion on October 29 as part of its summer 2027 flight program, which includes new routes to Europe and extensions of selected Caribbean services. Under the revised schedule, Air Transat will maintain its Montreal to St. Maarten connection during the summer season with one weekly flight operating on Saturdays. The decision effectively transitions the route from a primarily winter-focused service to a year-round operation.

The extension is a positive development for St. Maarten's tourism sector, particularly as the destination continues working to strengthen air connectivity, attract visitors outside the peak winter months, and encourage more consistent tourism activity throughout the year.

Canada has long been an important source market for Caribbean tourism, with Montreal serving as a major departure point for travelers seeking warm-weather destinations. Maintaining direct access to St. Maarten during the summer could create additional opportunities for hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, transportation providers, attractions, and other businesses that depend on visitor spending.

Year-round service also provides greater flexibility for residents, returning visitors, and people traveling between Canada and St. Maarten for family, business, or leisure purposes. Rather than being limited to the airline's winter operations, travelers will have another direct flight option during the summer period.

The announcement is particularly relevant to efforts to reduce seasonal fluctuations in tourism activity. While the winter months traditionally generate strong demand for Caribbean travel, maintaining international flight connections during the quieter months can help destinations sustain visitor arrivals and support employment across the tourism industry.

Air Transat's decision does not necessarily mean that summer demand will match winter traffic, and the airline has announced only one weekly summer flight on the Montreal-St. Maarten route. Nevertheless, the commitment to operate throughout the year represents an expansion of available airlift and provides an opportunity for destination marketing efforts targeting Canadian travelers during the summer season.

In announcing its summer 2027 network, Air Transat Chief Revenue Officer Sebastian Ponce explained that the airline is seeking to broaden its range of destinations while offering travelers greater flexibility in planning their holidays.

The St. Maarten extension forms part of a broader expansion that will also see Air Transat introduce five new nonstop European routes. These include Montreal to Geneva, Switzerland; Toronto to Birmingham, United Kingdom; Quebec City to Lyon and Barcelona; and Montreal to Faro, Portugal.

The airline also announced that its service between Quebec City and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic will be extended to year-round operations, with one weekly summer flight operating on Mondays.

The expansion reflects Air Transat's strategy of maintaining a presence in selected sun destinations beyond the winter season while developing its international network. The airline, headquartered in Montreal, specializes in leisure travel and operates routes connecting Canada with destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, and other international markets.

For St. Maarten, the new arrangement could also strengthen access to travelers originating outside Montreal. Air Transat's partnership with Porter Airlines provides connecting opportunities through its broader Canadian network, potentially extending the island's reach to passengers from other Canadian cities.

The year-round commitment offers an opportunity for St. Maarten's tourism stakeholders to promote the destination more aggressively during the summer, including its beaches, culinary experiences, marine activities, cultural attractions, and accommodation offerings.

The addition of summer flights also comes as Caribbean destinations compete to secure reliable air service and maintain visitor traffic throughout the calendar year. Direct airlift remains an important factor in a destination's accessibility and competitiveness, particularly for islands whose economies rely heavily on international tourism.

Air Transat has not announced any additional summer frequencies for the St. Maarten route beyond the weekly Saturday service. The airline's announcement also did not specify projected passenger numbers or the anticipated economic impact of the extension.

The decision nevertheless establishes an additional year-round connection between St. Maarten and one of Canada's principal international aviation hubs, creating opportunities to strengthen tourism ties and support a more consistent flow of Canadian visitors to the island.
