GREAT BAY--Camillo Bakhuis, according to Curacao media, has been appointed the new head of The Windward Islands Bank, WIB, in St. Maarten and will assume the position on November 1, succeeding Country Manager Daisy Tyrol-Carolus.

Bakhuis, 53, brings more than two decades of experience in the financial sector, including 13 years with Maduro & Curiel’s Bank, MCB, in Curaçao. He currently serves as a statutory director of Gi-Ro Settlement Holding, the entity established to manage the settlement of the former Girobank portfolio.

His professional background includes senior banking and management positions, including General Manager of MCB Group’s Central Retail Collection Unit, Manager of Personal Accounts and Collection, and Manager of Credit Operations. Before joining MCB, he also worked in management at Stichting Belastingaccountantsbureau.

Bakhuis has additionally held roles outside commercial banking. He has served as chairman of Human Rights Defense Curaçao and was previously involved with Fundashon Kòrsou Transparente. He has also taught courses in human resource management and operations management at the University of Curaçao.

At Gi-Ro Settlement Holding, Bakhuis has been part of the leadership team overseeing the winding down of the former Girobank portfolio. Under the organization’s management, substantial repayments have been made on the government-backed financing connected to the settlement process, while efforts have continued to resolve outstanding obligations involving former Girobank clients.

The final months of 2026 will serve as a transition period at WIB in Philipsburg, with Tyrol-Carolus expected to guide Bakhuis through the handover before her retirement at the end of the year.

Tyrol-Carolus became WIB’s first female Country Manager in 2023 and has more than 30 years of experience in the financial sector across Curaçao and the Dutch Caribbean. During her tenure, she focused on customer service, digital development and strengthening the bank’s connection with the community.

Bakhuis’ appointment returns him to the wider MCB Group, this time in St. Maarten, where WIB has operated for more than six decades and remains one of the country’s established financial institutions.
