GREAT BAY--Members of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps are currently assisting the Police Force of St. Maarten (KPSM) with control operations across the island, while additional personnel from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar) are expected to join the operations this week as government intensifies efforts to combat illegal firearms, drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
The additional law enforcement support follows a formal request by Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling to the Dutch Ministry of Defence, aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the local police force and increasing the visible presence of law enforcement personnel throughout St. Maarten.
In a statement issued Tuesday, October 27, the Ministry of Justice explained that the deployment forms part of a broader strategy to provide KPSM with additional resources to address priority security concerns.
The joint operations include general checks, traffic controls and targeted stops and searches of individuals and vehicles, with particular attention being given to detecting illegal firearms and narcotics.
According to the Ministry, all activities are being conducted in coordination with KPSM and within applicable legal authorities and procedures.
The involvement of Dutch military personnel is intended to expand the operational capacity available to KPSM, allowing for intensified enforcement activities while supporting ongoing efforts to address firearm possession, drug trafficking and related criminal offenses.
The Ministry indicated that cooperation with Kingdom partners remains an important component of its strategy to strengthen public safety, while continuing to develop St. Maarten's own justice and law enforcement capabilities.
The additional support is also intended to reinforce local policing efforts rather than replace the responsibilities of KPSM, which continues to coordinate the operations.
Residents and visitors are being asked to cooperate with law enforcement personnel during the controls. Motorists are advised to follow instructions issued by officers and military personnel involved in the operations and to anticipate possible traffic delays in areas where checks are taking place.
The Ministry of Justice and KPSM are also encouraging the public to assist law enforcement by reporting information concerning illegal firearms, drug trafficking or other criminal activity.
Information can be reported directly to KPSM at +1 721 542 2222 or anonymously through the police tip line at 9300. Members of the public should call 911 in emergencies.
