Dutch Political party PRO to Hold first information meeting on Bonaire

KRALENDIJK, BONAIRE--Dutch political party Progressief Nederland (PRO) will hold its first public information meeting on Bonaire on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, bringing two members of the European Parliament to the island for discussions about Bonaire's relationship with the European Union, European policy developments and opportunities that could benefit residents.
The meeting, organized by PRO's local Bonaire branch, will take place at Kas di Futuro, Kaya Mississippi 3, in Kralendijk. The public discussion, under the theme "Europe and the Importance of Bonaire," is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m., with the evening's program starting at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
European Parliament members Marit Maij and Mohammed Chahim are scheduled to participate, alongside Kenville Kleinmoedig, PRO's international secretary and a member of the party's national executive board.
The gathering is intended to give residents an opportunity to learn more about European developments and how decisions taken at the European level can affect Bonaire. Organizers also want to explore opportunities available to the island through its relationship with Europe, including potential benefits associated with European cooperation and financial support.
Maij and Chahim are expected to discuss their work in the European Parliament and engage directly with attendees about Bonaire's interests, concerns and position within the European political framework.
Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in discussions about how European policies and initiatives could influence the island's future.
The meeting comes as Caribbean territories within the Kingdom of the Netherlands seek to strengthen their engagement with European institutions and make greater use of available European funding opportunities.
For Bonaire, discussions about Europe are particularly relevant given the island's continued challenges involving housing, infrastructure, economic development, environmental protection and the cost of living.
The gathering is expected to provide a forum for examining how European cooperation might contribute to addressing some of these challenges, while also considering possible risks associated with policy developments in Europe.
The initiative also offers residents an opportunity to engage directly with politicians who participate in European decision-making, rather than relying exclusively on communication through institutions in the Netherlands.
PRO is a Dutch political party formed through the merger of GroenLinks and the Labour Party (PvdA). It currently holds 20 seats in the Netherlands' 150-member House of Representatives and 14 seats in the 75-member Senate, making it one of the country's major opposition parties.
The party's political agenda focuses on social equality, affordable housing, economic security, accessible healthcare, stronger public services and environmental sustainability.
As previously reported by The People's Tribune on October 12, PRO has already taken steps to establish its local presence on Bonaire, extending the organization into the Caribbean Netherlands.
Kleinmoedig previously explained that the Bonaire branch would initially function as a local point of contact for residents and organizations, provide support to the party's political representatives and help coordinate activities on the island.
The establishment of the local organization does not automatically mean that PRO will contest Bonaire's Island Council elections scheduled for March 2027. The party has not committed to presenting candidates, and its future participation in local elections remains uncertain.
For now, the October 28 information meeting will provide an opportunity for the party to engage with the Bonaire community on European affairs and hear directly from residents about the issues they believe deserve greater attention.
