Government will block all illegal wastewater pipes leading Into public drains and roads

GREAT BAY--Government will block wastewater pipes and connections found illegally discharging wastewater into public drainage systems or onto public roads, as the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure (VROMI) moves to enforce regulations prohibiting unauthorized wastewater disposal.
In a public notice, the Ministry warned property owners, businesses, contractors and other parties that pumping or discharging wastewater into government drains or onto public roads is strictly prohibited. Any pipes or connections found being used for these purposes will be subject to enforcement measures, including being blocked.
The Ministry explained that the illegal discharge of wastewater creates serious environmental and public health concerns, contributes to unpleasant odors and unsanitary conditions, and can negatively affect the country's drainage infrastructure and surrounding environment.
According to VROMI, individuals and establishments engaging in these activities are violating the National Wastewater Ordinance and the Algemeen Politie Keur (APK), which regulate wastewater disposal and related public health and environmental matters.
The Ministry said it will monitor unauthorized wastewater discharge and take enforcement action against individuals and businesses found violating the regulations.
Property owners and businesses are being reminded that wastewater must be properly contained, transported and disposed of through approved methods and facilities. The Ministry specifically called for wastewater to be connected to sealed holding tanks and disposed of responsibly in accordance with applicable requirements.
The warning also places responsibility on property owners and establishments to ensure that their wastewater systems are not illegally connected to public drainage infrastructure or used to discharge wastewater onto roads.
VROMI is calling on the public to cooperate with the enforcement measures and help prevent practices that contribute to pollution and unsanitary conditions in communities.
Residents who observe suspected illegal wastewater discharge are encouraged to report the matter to the Ministry of VROMI and the Ministry of Justice.
The Ministry emphasized that proper wastewater management is necessary to protect public health, preserve the environment and maintain St. Maarten's drainage infrastructure.
