Minister Gumbs concludes BOPP placement

GREAT BAY--Minister of Finance Marinka Gumbs and her Cabinet have announced the successful completion of Ifechukwude Akams’ internship under the Business Outreach and Placement Program, BOPP.

Through the Department of Youth Affairs’ program, Akams completed her work experience placement within the Cabinet of the Minister of Finance. BOPP is intended to connect education with the workplace by giving young people practical experience in a professional environment.

During the internship, Akams was introduced to the daily operations of the Ministry and the Minister’s Cabinet, gaining insight into public service, governance and financial administration. She plans to pursue a career in accounting and become a financial auditor, and the placement provided experience that can support her as she continues her studies.

Gumbs commended Akams for the professionalism and commitment she demonstrated throughout the placement.

“On behalf of my Cabinet, I extend my sincere appreciation to Ms. Akams for the dedication, discipline, and enthusiasm she displayed throughout her internship. She approached every task with professionalism, a willingness to learn, and a genuine passion for personal growth. It has been a pleasure to witness her development, and I wish her every success as she continues her educational journey and works toward achieving her career aspirations,” Gumbs said.

The Minister also thanked the coordinators of BOPP and the Department of Youth Affairs for successfully delivering the program and continuing to create opportunities that help prepare the next generation of professionals for St. Maarten.

Gumbs said investing in young people remains one of the most meaningful investments a country can make.

“Our young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are contributors today. By providing opportunities to learn, develop, and gain practical experience, we are helping to prepare a generation that is equipped to contribute meaningfully to the future of St. Maarten.”

The Ministry of Finance said it remains committed to supporting programs that allow young people to gain practical experience, develop their talents and prepare for successful careers. The Ministry will also continue advocating for initiatives that encourage students and young professionals to return home and use their knowledge and expertise to strengthen the institutions serving the people of St. Maarten.

The Ministry called for continued investment in young people, noting that supporting their development today is an investment in the country’s future.
