GREAT BAY--Leo-Lion Nichele Smith has been appointed Leo-Lion Board Liaison to the Lions International Board of Directors for the 2026-2027 Lions year, placing her among a select group of leaders helping to strengthen cooperation between Lions and Leos worldwide.
The appointment represents a significant achievement for Multiple District 60, which comprises Lions and Leos throughout the English-speaking Caribbean, Suriname and Guyana. In her new international role, Smith will help ensure that the perspectives, ideas and aspirations of young members are represented within the global organization.
Lions International is one of the world’s largest service organizations, with approximately 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. Its members are united by a commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities through humanitarian service.
As Leo-Lion Board Liaison, Smith will serve as a link between the International Board of Directors and the worldwide Leo movement. She will promote collaboration between Leos and Lions while supporting efforts to create leadership and service opportunities for young people.
The Leo-Lion Board Liaison is a one-year, non-voting appointment to the Lions International Board of Directors. Liaisons are selected annually by the serving international president and act as advocates and advisors for young adult members.
Their responsibilities include contributing to global initiatives and standing committees, travelling on behalf of Lions Clubs International and speaking at club meetings, district gatherings, forums and conventions.
Smith’s appointment highlights the leadership being developed within Multiple District 60 and the growing contribution of Caribbean Lions and Leos to the international organization.
Speaking on her appointment, Smith described the opportunity as both humbling and inspiring.
“Service has been one of the most transformative parts of my life. To now serve at the international level is an incredible privilege that I do not take lightly. I remain committed to listening, learning, and working alongside Lions and Leos around the world to strengthen our organization and create opportunities for young people to lead through service,” she said.
Her selection also contributes to the continued advancement and visibility of women in leadership throughout Lions International. As more women assume decision-making roles at every level of the organization, Smith’s appointment reflects the importance of inclusion, equal opportunity and diverse leadership.
Her journey demonstrates how dedication, perseverance and a sustained commitment to community service can create opportunities to contribute beyond national and regional borders.
The 2026-2027 Lions year is being led by Lions International President Mark S. Lyon under the theme “Rooted in Service.” The theme encourages Lions and Leos to remain focused on the organization’s central purpose of serving others.
It also emphasizes that while leadership positions and achievements are important, the strength of Lions International is grounded in its commitment to compassionate service. Every project, volunteer hour and act of kindness can contribute to meaningful change in the lives of individuals and communities.
Smith said the theme reflects the journey and responsibility of leadership.
“As we grow, we must never lose sight of why we began. When we remain rooted in service, we lead with humility, compassion, and purpose. Our greatest impact comes not from the titles we hold but from the lives we touch,” she said.
Her appointment is also expected to encourage young people throughout Multiple District 60 and beyond by demonstrating that age does not have to be a barrier to leadership and that service at the local level can create opportunities on the international stage.
Through Leo Clubs and Lions Clubs, young people are given opportunities to build confidence, develop leadership skills, form lasting friendships and strengthen their commitment to improving their communities.
As Lions International continues investing in youth leadership, Smith encouraged more young people to become involved in service.
