SIMPSON BAY--The Simpson Bay dock will be closed to the public as of Wednesday, October 7, as the Government moves into the next phase of a comprehensive rebuilding and beautification project expected to take approximately two to three months.

Preparatory work has been underway over the past month, including the removal of lights, damaged fencing, abandoned vehicles and a waste bin from the area. With the start of the main construction phase, access to the dock will be restricted while the rehabilitation is carried out.

To maintain services for the maritime community, Immigration services normally provided at the Simpson Bay dock have been temporarily relocated to the Ferry Dock at Princess Juliana International Airport. The temporary location will operate daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The project is being carried out through a partnership between the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure (VROMI) and The Gioia Group. The works are intended to modernize a facility that serves as an important gateway for St. Maarten’s maritime and yachting sector.

The project includes the complete reconstruction of the dock to meet modern maritime standards, full rebuilding of the parking area, construction of a dedicated garbage room, installation of trees and landscaping, and repairs to the adjacent police station and sewage treatment system. Improvements will also be made to the general surroundings of the police and immigration station.

Once completed, the upgraded facilities are expected to improve services for the maritime community while providing a safer and more welcoming environment for justice personnel and members of the public. Proper parking arrangements and enforcement will also be introduced to address longstanding access concerns raised by residents of Simpson Bay Village.

The Ministry of Justice said the temporary relocation will allow Immigration personnel to continue providing essential services throughout the construction period. The Ministry is also exploring the possibility of establishing an additional temporary service location to further accommodate the maritime community, with discussions still ongoing.

The Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) is asking yacht agents, captains, marinas, vessel operators and other members of the maritime community to take note of the temporary arrangements and cooperate during the refurbishment period.
