FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA--St. Maarten's participation in the 2026 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has placed the island among international marine industry players at a time when developments in yacht technology, maintenance and refitting are creating opportunities for destinations seeking to expand their share of the global yachting business.

The five-day event, held from October 28 to November 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, brought together yacht manufacturers, brokers, marina operators, shipyards, technology companies and other maritime businesses. Recognized as the world's largest in-water boat show, the event was expected to feature more than 1,300 vessels and over 1,000 exhibitors, providing a major platform for commercial networking and industry announcements.

St. Maarten participated through Destination Hub, an initiative established by The Yacht Club at Port de Plaisance to bring the island's yachting industry together under a coordinated international marketing effort.

The initiative included Palapa Marina, the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau and Port St. Maarten, with the delegation represented in the YATCO Lounge through a partnership with the international yacht industry platform. The arrangement provided access to brokers, yacht representatives and other industry professionals whose decisions influence vessel movements, marina bookings and charter activity.

The Fort Lauderdale appearance followed Destination Hub's participation in the Monaco Yacht Show in September, reflecting an effort to maintain St. Maarten's visibility within two important international yachting markets. However, developments at this year's Fort Lauderdale show also highlighted opportunities extending beyond the traditional business of attracting yachts to local marinas.

Among the notable industry developments was the introduction of RefitX 2027, a new international conference and exhibition dedicated specifically to yacht maintenance, repairs, modernization and refitting.

Scheduled to debut October 27 and 28, 2027, alongside next year's Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, RefitX will bring together shipyards, engineers, designers, equipment manufacturers, technical specialists and other marine professionals.

Organizers used the 2026 show to introduce the initiative, which will focus on developments in yacht technology, shipyard infrastructure, project management and the skilled workforce required to maintain increasingly sophisticated vessels.

For St. Maarten, the development is relevant because the island already possesses an established marine services industry capable of handling vessel repairs, maintenance and refitting. Businesses operating around the Simpson Bay Lagoon provide services ranging from mechanical and electrical work to rigging, fabrication, painting, provisioning and specialized yacht maintenance.

Earlier this year, the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA), working with the National Employment Service Center, organized a Marine Industry Immersion Day that gave government officials and other stakeholders a closer look at the sector's economic importance.

The June 17 exercise included visits to IMM Shipyard, Island Water World, FKG Marine Rigging, Electec and other marine businesses. It highlighted investments already being made in vessel maintenance and repair, while identifying concerns about workforce availability, technical training, infrastructure and the business environment.

The economic value of the yachting industry is not limited to the number or size of vessels visiting a destination.

Yachts require fuel, food, maintenance, equipment, transportation and administrative services. Their crews and guests also contribute to spending at restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, retail businesses and other establishments.

Attracting more vessels is therefore only one part of the equation. Keeping them on the island longer, encouraging repeat visits and expanding the range of services available locally could increase the economic benefits generated by the industry.

St. Maarten already has several advantages, including an established marina network, experienced marine businesses, access to regional cruising destinations and a history of serving the international yacht charter market.

Nevertheless, competition among Caribbean destinations means that marketing alone will not determine where yachts choose to operate. Marina capacity, service quality, technical expertise, regulatory efficiency and the availability of qualified workers are among the factors that can influence decisions by yacht owners, captains and management companies.

The technological changes featured at Fort Lauderdale could also present new demands for local service providers. The show included introductions such as the Pearl 100 Hybrid, the first hybrid-powered model from Pearl Yachts, and the Delta 72, which uses lightweight carbon-fiber construction to improve efficiency.

As new propulsion systems and onboard technologies become more common, destinations seeking to attract and service these vessels may need to invest in specialized training, equipment and technical capabilities.

St. Maarten's continued presence at international yacht shows demonstrates the importance local stakeholders attach to maintaining relationships with brokers, captains, yacht owners and industry representatives.

The Destination Hub initiative also reflects cooperation between public and private sector organizations, something industry stakeholders have repeatedly identified as important to strengthening the island's international position.

The next measure of success, however, will be the extent to which that exposure translates into business. Specific outcomes from St. Maarten's participation in the 2026 Fort Lauderdale show, including new commercial agreements, confirmed yacht bookings or additional refitting projects, have not yet been publicly established.
