St. Maarten Lions Club distributes food baskets to diabetic seniors through “Teach Me to Fish” project

GREAT BAY--The St. Maarten Lions Club carried out its annual “Teach Me to Fish” Project, distributing 84 food baskets to seniors in need across the Dutch side of St. Maarten.

This year’s project focused on providing diabetic-friendly food items for seniors, particularly those living with diabetes or other health-related challenges. The initiative was carried out under the leadership of Lions Club President Alvin Prescod, with support from Lions members, partners, and donors.

The baskets were distributed directly to seniors in the community and through several organizations, including the White and Yellow Cross, members of the Anglican Church, the International Youths Ministry, and the Nurse Nanny Nurssy Foundation.

President Prescod thanked those who supported the project and said the initiative was intended to help seniors maintain healthier eating habits.

“It is truly heartwarming to see so many people recognize the importance of helping our seniors maintain a healthy lifestyle. The overwhelming support from our members, partners, and donors made it possible for us to provide meaningful assistance to those living with diabetes and other health challenges. Seeing the smiles and appreciation from the recipients is the greatest reward and a reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to help those in need,” Prescod said.

The St. Maarten Lions Club also thanked Cost-U-Less for its donation to the project and Lucky’s for providing a discount on supplies.

The “Teach Me to Fish” Project is one of the club’s community service initiatives focused on supporting seniors and addressing local needs through volunteer service. The St. Maarten Lions Club said it will continue to carry out projects in the areas of health, hunger relief, youth development, and community support.

Prescod said the club remains committed to being active in the community under his presidential slogan, “We Outside,” by reaching people where they are and responding to identified needs.
