St. Maarten & Saint Martin Named Fastest-Rising Caribbean Destination for Couples Travel

GREAT BAY/MARIGOT--St. Maarten & Saint Martin has been highlighted as the fastest-rising destination in the Caribbean for couples vacations, with the island’s unique two-country character, strong airlift, culinary appeal, wellness offerings and variety of romantic experiences helping to position it at the front of one of the region’s most important travel trends.
The distinction, is based on findings from the Caribbean Travel Trends Report by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association and Amadeus, which identifies St. Maarten as the region’s fastest-growing destination for two-person travel. According to the report, the island recorded an 8 percent year-over-year increase in this category through the spring. The general findings of this report was published by The Peoples' Tribune on May 16, 2026.
The latest hightlight, published on Monday by the Caribbean Journal, also notes that couples travel, or what it refers to as duo-trips, now accounts for 40.4 percent of all tourist arrivals to the Caribbean, making it the largest segment of the regional market. This category includes more than traditional honeymoons. It also covers romantic getaways, anniversary trips, milestone celebrations and wellness vacations built around rest, spa treatments and slower-paced travel.
For St. Maarten, the recognition is significant because it places the destination directly within a high-value tourism segment that continues to shape travel demand across the Caribbean. The island’s appeal, according to Caribbean Journal, is rooted in its ability to offer two distinct vacation styles on one compact island: the Dutch side with its energy, nightlife, airport access, resorts and wellness options, and the French side with its culinary reputation, beaches, boutique hotels and slower European rhythm.
The publication points to Grand Case on the French side as one of the clearest examples of the island’s romantic appeal. Known for its restaurants, beachfront setting, galleries, boutiques and lolos, Grand Case is described as a strong draw for couples looking for a quieter and more intimate Caribbean experience. Properties such as Grand Case Beach Club, Love SXM and Karibuni are highlighted as examples of boutique and romantic stays that support the island’s couples market.
On the Dutch side, the report highlights Maho and Simpson Bay for couples who want more energy, nightlife, spa experiences and convenient access. The Morgan Resort, Spa and Village is identified as a standout couples property, with its pool area, rooftop observation deck, spa services and location near Maho’s restaurants, bars and shops helping to support the wellness and romantic getaway market.
The feature also notes that St. Maarten’s airlift remains one of its strongest advantages. Princess Juliana International Airport connects the island to major markets in the United States, Canada and Europe, with service from carriers including JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier, Air Canada, WestJet, KLM and Air France. The accessibility of the destination makes St. Maarten attractive for spontaneous trips, shorter stays, honeymoons and couples seeking a Caribbean vacation without complicated connections.
Another key selling point identified is the ease with which visitors can move between both sides of the island. Couples can spend part of their vacation in Grand Case or another French-side destination, then shift to Maho, Simpson Bay or another Dutch-side location for a different experience. Caribbean Journal describes the contrast between the two sides as one of the island’s main advantages, especially for couples who want variety without having to visit multiple islands.
The recognition comes at a time when St. Maarten has been working to strengthen its tourism product through improved accommodations, expanded airlift, destination marketing and greater attention to niche travel segments. Couples travel is particularly important because it often supports restaurants, boutique hotels, spas, excursions, car rentals, beach clubs and high-spend visitor experiences.
For the local tourism sector, the report presents an opportunity to further position St. Maarten as more than a traditional sun, sea and shopping destination. The island’s combination of romance, food, nightlife, wellness, beach access and cultural contrast gives tourism stakeholders a clear platform to market directly to couples, honeymooners and travelers seeking both relaxation and activity.
The Caribbean Journal feature concludes that St. Maarten’s strength lies in its ability to offer two distinct vacation experiences in one destination. For couples, that means the choice does not have to be between a quiet culinary escape and a lively resort-centered getaway. In St. Maarten, the appeal is that both are available on the same island.
