Statia committee confirms November 13 reburial of Golden Rock ancestral remains

ST. EUSTATIUS--The Statia Cultural Heritage Implementation Committee (SCHIC) has submitted a letter to Local Authorities and the Descendant Community confirming that the reburial of the Golden Rock ancestral remains will continue on November 13, 2026, while continuing to advocate for the community's right to be informed and consulted regarding any research involving their ancestors.
The Committee thanked community members for sharing concerns publicly and privately and explained its earlier recommendation to pause the reburial process for 30 to 60 days. The Committee said the recommendation followed serious concerns raised during a September 16 meeting with government officials and representatives involved in cultural heritage matters.
The concerns included the Executive Council's expressed interest in researching the ancestral remains. The Committee believed the timeline for such research would not allow sufficient opportunity to consult with the Descendant Community on issues related to the ancestral remains. The Committee stressed that community members have a right to participate in discussions concerning the treatment and future study of the remains.
The Committee also noted that questions were raised about the ancestry of some remains and that additional research might be needed to confirm ancestry. The Committee emphasized that the community deserves a clear understanding of these questions before making decisions about research or interpretation.
While these concerns remain important, the Committee stated that it believes two objectives can and should move forward together: the reburial of the ancestors and ongoing efforts to ensure that the Descendant Community understands its rights and role in decisions about future research. The Committee reaffirmed that proceeding with the reburial does not mean abandoning questions related to research or community consultation.
The Committee thanked the Executive Council for supporting preparations for the reburial, noting that the reburial site has been officially designated, the procession permit has been issued, and funding has been secured.
One important condition remains outstanding: the samples removed from the ancestral remains in 2021 must be returned to St. Eustatius in time for the reburial so that the ancestors may be laid to rest whole.
To provide additional context, the Committee has also released a public blog outlining a factual timeline of its work since its establishment.
The Committee said it will continue to keep the community informed of developments leading up to the reburial ceremony.
