Statia Government confirms GTI oil spill was contained within terminal

STATIA--The Statia Government has confirmed that an oil spill reported on July 21, 2026, at the Global Terminal Investment, GTI, oil terminal was contained within the facility and did not pose a risk to the public or the surrounding environment.

Following notification of the incident, the Emergency Response Team, including the Emergency Operations Center, engaged with the terminal and assessed the situation.

Based on the information available, the spill remained within the boundaries of the privately operated facility. No impact was identified on public health, air quality, the marine environment, surrounding nature or nearby communities.

No protective measures were required, and there is currently no risk to the general public.

The Government is issuing the statement following increased public concern and the circulation of unverified information about the incident.

The Statia Government will continue to monitor the situation in coordination with the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate, ILT, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, IenW, and other relevant authorities.

Should the assessment change or new information become available, the public will be informed promptly.

As the incident occurred at a privately operated facility, GTI is responsible for providing further details concerning its operations and the circumstances surrounding the spill.

The Statia Government remains committed to providing the public with accurate and verified information while safeguarding the health of the community and the environment.
