Mr. Meyers, you need to fix the humanity of your Minister.

Dear Editor,

I would like to respectfully address MP Franklin Meyers.

Sir, I respect you. I genuinely do. I am from the old school, so I understand a lot of things. One of the things I understand is that there were politicians who once truly cared about people. Sadly, I believe that is no longer always the case, and that, to me, is one of the biggest problems with some of our newer politicians.

I want to openly address you and ask you to please try to fix your Minister, Ms. Tackling. I am sure she means well, but the Minister appears to be disconnected in some way. Along with the prosecutor, she often seems to hide behind procedure while basic humanity is pushed aside.

She uses the prosecutor as a crutch, when she, as Minister, should still be able to say, “No, I do not think this is right.” That, to me, is a symptom of being disconnected from the people.

We are sitting by and watching people being released, or not being kept locked up, because the jail is full. It happened with the Trinidadians earlier, and now it appears to have happened again. She can say that this latest case has nothing to do with space, but many of us know better.

Meanwhile, there are people in jail who should be at home, locked up and monitored. People who are not violent. But the Minister makes us believe that she can do nothing. She can. We know better.

She wants us to believe that the suspect was deported because of some law. But what about saying, “Wait, this family is suffering. We need to get to the bottom of this. This will not go over well with the people.” If he had to sit here in a cell, then so be it. Someone else is dead.

The Minister should have known better. She should have been more sensitive.

And the fact that you, Mr. Meyers, her political leader, came out and said you do not agree with it says a lot. In your own words, I could tell that you felt it. But she did not seem to feel it.

I am not calling her heartless. She appears to be a by-the-book person. But this is St. Maarten. She obviously does not know enough people to understand how deeply these things affect families and the wider community. Sometimes humanity must carry the day. Sometimes you can be human and still execute the law.

To allow a deportation in a case like this feels inhumane to a suffering family.

Mr. Meyers, you need to fix the humanity of your Minister.
