Democratic Party welcomes Connor as VSA Minister, urges action on health and social priorities

GREAT BAY--The Democratic Party has welcomed the appointment of Claret Connor as Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, VSA, while stressing the need for immediate attention to several pressing health, social and labor issues affecting St. Maarten.

The party said it is pleased that the VSA portfolio has been filled, noting that the Ministry is responsible for some of the most fundamental areas affecting the daily lives and wellbeing of residents. According to the DP, stable leadership and continuity within the Ministry are critical given the scope and urgency of the challenges ahead.

The Democratic Party extended its best wishes to Minister Connor and wished him wisdom and strength as he takes on the responsibility of leading the Ministry.

“Minister Connor comes to the position with considerable experience, and we trust that this will allow him to hit the ground running.”

The party said one of the Minister’s immediate priorities should be the healthcare system, including the financial position and outstanding obligations surrounding Social and Health Insurances, SZV, as well as the broader need to ensure accessible and sustainable healthcare.

The DP also pointed to continuing gaps in health insurance coverage, particularly as uncertainty remains over the introduction of General Health Insurance, GHI.

“With the introduction of the General Health Insurance (GHI) in 2027 appearing increasingly unlikely, we cannot simply wait. The existing gaps in medical insurance coverage must be addressed, particularly for persons such as sole proprietors, taxi and bus drivers, small entrepreneurs and others who too often find themselves without adequate coverage”, the DP leader commented.

According to the party, St. Maarten’s social challenges require similar urgency. Poverty and the wider problems associated with financial hardship continue to affect households, while gambling and other forms of addiction are placing additional pressure on individuals, families and communities.

The DP said these issues must be addressed as part of a broader social policy that recognizes the relationship between economic circumstances, family wellbeing and access to support services.

The party also called for greater preparation for St. Maarten’s aging population and the growing demands this will place on healthcare, social services, pensions and elderly care. It said planning in these areas must begin well before demographic pressures become more difficult and costly to manage.

Labor policy should also remain a major focus of the VSA Ministry, the party said. Changes in the labor market, worker protections, the availability of skilled labor and the relationship between employment, immigration and economic development all require clear policy direction.

The Democratic Party said that while the challenges facing the Ministry are significant, they also present opportunities to make measurable improvements in the lives of residents.

The party said it looks forward to hearing from Minister Connor in the near future about his priorities for VSA and, more importantly, the concrete actions that will be taken to address the healthcare, social and labor issues facing the country.

The Democratic Party wished Minister Connor success in his new role and said it remains prepared to contribute constructively where doing so advances the health, social wellbeing and economic security of the people of St. Maarten.
