Finance Minister Marinka Gumbs provides public updates on activities through Finance Forward Newsletter

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten: Minister of Finance Marinka Gumbs has made the first two editions of the Ministry of Finance’s Finance Forward newsletter available to the public, providing updates on the Ministry’s activities during the first two quarters of the year.

The digital newsletter offers residents a snapshot of the work being carried out across the Ministry, including efforts to strengthen St. Maarten’s public finances, modernize government systems and improve services.

Presented as an online flip-book, Finance Forward is intended to keep the public informed about the Ministry’s ongoing activities, priorities and progress.

Minister Gumbs said the Ministry’s work is being guided by three phases: stabilize, repair and reform.

“We are at a pivotal moment in our country’s financial journey. The work before us is not simply about numbers, but about restoring confidence, strengthening our systems and building a more resilient and fair economy for all,” Gumbs said.

The stabilization phase focuses on maintaining fiscal balance, safeguarding government operations and ensuring that the foundation of the country’s public finances remains steady and reliable.

The repair phase addresses long-standing inefficiencies, including the modernization of the tax administration and improvements in compliance. The aim is to create a system that is fair, practical and capable of restoring public trust.

The reform phase is focused on longer-term development through targeted, data-driven measures intended to support economic growth, encourage investment and ease burdens where they affect residents and businesses most.

“This is not about increasing pressure on our people, but about creating a smarter, more balanced system that reflects the realities of St. Maarten today,” Gumbs said.

Through Finance Forward, the Ministry aims to provide regular and accessible updates about its activities and the progress being made in the management of the country’s finances.

“Transparency and communication are essential as we move forward together,” Gumbs said.

She added that the Ministry remains committed to developing financial policies that support the country’s present needs while securing future opportunities.
