GREAT BAY--Following the release of her accountability report, Member of Parliament Roseburg has launched a WhatsApp channel aimed at giving the people of St. Maarten more direct and regular access to information about her work in Parliament.

The initiative is intended to strengthen the connection between elected representatives and the people they serve. Members of the public often express frustration that it can be difficult to reach their MPs, understand what they are working on, or keep track of issues after they are raised in Parliament. The new channel provides another way for residents to stay connected to parliamentary work and follow developments directly.

While a WhatsApp channel does not replace personal contact, public meetings or other forms of engagement, Roseburg said it can help reduce the distance that sometimes develops between elected officials and the public. It gives residents an accessible way to see what is being raised, proposed and pursued on their behalf.

Accountability, Roseburg said, should not be something the public only sees once a year. It should be visible throughout the process, allowing people to follow the work of their representatives and judge that work for themselves.

"After my accountability report, I wanted to bring what I do even closer to the people," said MP Roseburg. "This channel means you don't have to wait for a report, or hear about my work secondhand on social media. You can follow it directly, as it unfolds."

Through the WhatsApp channel, members of the public will receive updates on legislative work, including laws that have been submitted and what proposed changes could mean for the people of St. Maarten.

Residents will also be able to follow developments surrounding the national budget and receive information that can help them better understand the debate and provide input on matters affecting the country.

The channel will provide updates on proposals Roseburg submits to Government, the initiatives she brings forward and what happens after those proposals are made.

It will also feature "Law 101" information explaining in simple terms how Parliament, legislation and other parts of the lawmaking process work.

Ongoing accountability will be another central feature, giving the public an opportunity to track issues over time instead of only hearing about them when they are first raised.

The initiative also reflects the broader importance of keeping citizens connected to the democratic process. Access to information allows residents to ask better questions, follow commitments and make informed assessments of the people elected to represent them. It also gives MPs another avenue to explain their work outside formal parliamentary meetings.

For Roseburg, that connection is particularly important because accountability works best when the public can see not only what an MP says, but what happens afterward.

"If I raise an issue, you should be able to follow it. If I make a proposal, you should know about it. If I make a commitment, you should be able to hold me to it. That's what this channel is about," Roseburg added.

Members of the public are invited to scan the QR code to join MP Roseburg's WhatsApp channel and follow her work in Parliament.
