MSC’s New Flagship World Asia heading to St. Maarten in 2027

GREAT BAY--St. Maarten will be among the Caribbean destinations welcoming MSC Cruises’ newest flagship, MSC World Asia, after the cruise line announced a major change to its Winter 2027/2028 deployment that will send the new vessel across the Atlantic for a season in the South Caribbean.

MSC Cruises confirmed that MSC World Asia will operate seven and 14-night Caribbean itineraries with embarkation available from Fort-de-France, Martinique; Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe; and Bridgetown, Barbados. Philipsburg, St. Maarten is among seven regional ports included in the itineraries.

The deployment places St. Maarten on the itinerary of one of the newest and largest ships in MSC’s fleet at a time when major cruise lines continue introducing larger vessels capable of carrying thousands of passengers per sailing.

MSC World Asia has a gross tonnage of 215,863, measures 333.3 metres in length and has capacity for up to 6,762 passengers in 2,626 cabins. The vessel will also carry more than 2,100 crew members.

For St. Maarten, the decision means the destination will receive calls from MSC’s latest flagship within roughly a year of the vessel entering service.

MSC World Asia is scheduled to begin sailing on December 4, 2026, initially operating seven-night itineraries in the Mediterranean. The ship had been expected to continue its Mediterranean deployment during its second season, but MSC has now shifted it to the Caribbean for Winter 2027/2028.

In addition to Philipsburg, MSC World Asia’s South Caribbean itineraries will include Castries, Saint Lucia; St. George’s, Grenada; St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda; Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis; Roseau, Dominica; and Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Caribbean deployment represents a significant shift in MSC’s original plans for the 2027/2028 winter season.

MSC World Europa had originally been scheduled to operate in the Middle East but will instead remain in the Western Mediterranean. That decision opened the way for MSC World Asia to move to the South Caribbean, where MSC Meraviglia had previously been scheduled to operate. MSC has not yet announced where Meraviglia will be redeployed.

The change effectively places MSC’s newest flagship into the regional market earlier than previously anticipated, bringing another high-capacity, new-generation cruise vessel through the Port of St. Maarten.

MSC World Asia will be the third vessel in MSC Cruises’ World Class series and is being positioned by the company as its newest flagship.

Among its onboard attractions will be the Cliffhanger over-water swing, family attractions, entertainment venues and large outdoor areas designed for warm-weather cruising. MSC says the vessel will also feature its largest Venchi chocolate experience at sea.

The ship will feature more than 40 bars and lounges, three theatres, more than 10 pools and whirlpools, six children’s venues and four water slides.

Its size places MSC World Asia among the growing generation of mega cruise ships that are becoming increasingly important to Caribbean destinations capable of accommodating large vessels.

For St. Maarten, its inclusion in the new itinerary is another indication of the destination’s continued position within the itineraries of the major cruise brands and their newest vessels.

MSC has not yet disclosed in its announcement how many individual MSC World Asia calls Philipsburg will receive during the Winter 2027/2028 season or the specific dates of those calls.

Guests previously booked on MSC World Asia’s Mediterranean itineraries and MSC Meraviglia’s South Caribbean sailings for Winter 2027/2028 are being contacted regarding changes to their reservations.
