St. Maarten Library signs joint plan to strengthen Dutch Caribbean library network

GREAT BAY--The St. Maarten Library has joined libraries across the Dutch Caribbean in signing a joint network plan aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, improving the position of libraries and developing institutions better equipped to meet the future needs of their communities.

The agreement was signed during a week-long conference in El Salvador attended by libraries from St. Maarten, Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The National Library of the Netherlands, KB, and Rijnbrink also participated as partners in the developing Dutch Caribbean library network.

The gathering marked an important step in efforts to build a stronger and more sustainable relationship among libraries throughout the Dutch Caribbean, with participating institutions agreeing on shared ambitions and how they intend to work together in the years ahead.

The network plan was developed with guidance from Common Eye and is rooted in the needs, experiences and ambitions identified by the participating libraries themselves. Among its priorities are strengthening the position of Dutch Caribbean libraries and ensuring that they can continue developing as future-ready institutions.

By signing the plan, the participating libraries formally committed themselves to the ambitions and agreements developed collectively during the network-building process.

Rijnbrink will contribute as a knowledge and expertise partner, supporting the organizational and substantive development of the libraries. The KB and Rijnbrink will also assist participating institutions as they work to advance the goals identified in the joint plan.

The conference also provided St. Maarten Library representatives and their regional counterparts with an opportunity to learn from library professionals in El Salvador.

As part of a separate international knowledge exchange, representatives from the Dutch Caribbean libraries, KB and Rijnbrink visited several libraries in El Salvador to examine their working methods, activities and experiences.

The exchange allowed library professionals from St. Maarten, the wider Dutch Caribbean and El Salvador to share practical experiences, compare approaches and identify ideas that could strengthen the services they provide within their respective communities.

Organizers stressed that the exchange with El Salvador was separate from the Dutch Caribbean network and did not represent an expansion of the network to include Salvadoran libraries.

For the St. Maarten Library, the week combined regional network development with international learning, providing an opportunity to deepen relationships with neighboring islands while also gaining insight from institutions operating outside the Dutch Caribbean.

The participating libraries said stronger cooperation will allow them to share knowledge and experience, support one another and collectively increase the impact they have on their organizations and communities.

The conference concluded with participating institutions looking ahead to the implementation of the network plan, with the Dutch Caribbean libraries expected to continue working together to turn their shared ambitions into concrete initiatives.

The St. Maarten Library and its regional partners described the El Salvador gathering as a successful week centered on connection, exchange and mutual learning, with further collaboration between the islands expected to continue taking shape in the period ahead.
